»SEN+« | everyday tableware | 2006
1979 born in Datteln, North Rhine-Westphalia 1999 A-levels 1999 - 2004 scholar at Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes 1999 - 2002 studied Industrial Design at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal, undergraduate diploma 2002 change of school to Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee, department of product design 2004 internship at Kahla/Thüringen Porzellan GmbH 2005 internship at büro+staubach GmbH 2006 diploma degree 2006 Mart Stam Promotion Award of the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee 2007 scholar at Designlabor Bremerhaven
The SEN+ design developed out of the idea of considering in the design of everyday tableware the special needs that people with physical and motor disabilities have when eating and drinking. The aim is to compensate for motor deficiencies without stigmatizing and maintaining the independence of the people concerned for as long as possible. The design is based on an eccentrical morphing of single parts of the tableware items. These design effects appear at first sight to be minimal, however they make the items inestimably easier to use. The result is not a “special tableware”, but a universal design which is helpful for everyone and which is of high aesthetic value.

“gehsammler“ is a cardboard magazine file with two compartments and a handle giving it a very distinctive appearance. The handle adds mobility making it useful while walking or standing. The size of “gehsammler” is based on the DIN A4 format and matches the size of a regular magazine file. “gehsammler” is made out of one piece of cardboard, which is folded and glued together. The excess trimmings are minimal, enabling an environmental friendly and economical production. The two compartments make it possible to easily organize and secure papers, books and brochures. For shipping and storage “gehsammler” folds flat and saves space. Conceived mobile, “gehsammler” may be used for many purposes: at home, in school and at work, at fairs and exhibitions – it is helpful everywhere!n

»teapot with warmer and accompanying sugar and cream set« | 2006, 2007
1975 born in Delmenhorst 1995 A-levels 1995 - 1999 apprenticeship as goldsmith in Oldenburg 1999 - 2002 employment as goldsmith 2002 - 2007 studied of metal design at the HAWK Hildesheim 2007 diploma degree, freelance designer and silversmith
The approach to the design of this teapot with warmer and accompanying sugar and cream set was the formal expression of a situation, a surrounding, an action. A silver teapot does not represent a simple utensil but much rather a cultural product. In this sense it does hold a practical function but even more so it constitutes a cultural action: the drinking of tea. The non the less existing functional capacities of the design express themselves in its use as well as in its construction: the teapot is filled through the large opening, the liquid is being kept in the body of the vessel and is finally poured and portioned trough the small opening. One aim of the design was the creation of a closed and sculptural form for each of the vessels, which is not only the sum of the single functional elements. To accomplish this the teapot`s insulated handle made of cast synthetics is integrated in the form and produces only a delicate contrast in colour and surface to the silver vessel. The symmetrically constructed teapot is formally supplemented by the slightly asymmetrical and almost natural pair of forms of the sugar sprinkler and creamer.

With enthusiasm for aprons we started a lively cooperation in 2003. Our first product the apronbelt was born between screaming children and kindergarten. The key hook/hanger followed and crowned our chaos with the Design Plus Award (Prize). Because of our passion for design and fun creating together we got down to business and launched nordprodukt. We attend to all steps of our products process from design to manufacturing and sale. We appreciate simple design solutions that are hard to find. Products that make our everyday life easier and much more beautiful.

The reflection and interpretation of my own memory is an important motivation within my artistic work. I’m aiming somehow the reduction of personal matters to a kind of steady content of truth and a symbolic expression, which is commonly understood. In this sense my pictures are to be seen as concentrates, which refer to many different levels of interpretation besides the personal one. Being autonomous objects of art, they provoke new topics to be looked at by posing themselves questions, giving the answers, too.

In “Kosmos” I focus on a particular section of an urban environment – on playground objects made of stainless steel, of which I took pictures in the last hours of the daylight for the purpose of showing their unusual but in the broader sense maybe “true face“. In these hours a change takes place: the light leaves, the darkness arrives. This composition lets the objects shine. The space disappears as a result of the reduction of the light. What remains, is the exaggerated form of the objects. Due to his property, the playground equipment allows us an access into an unusual world, or rather said into a forgotten or an unlearned world. It leads us back to the haptic, back to the time when it wasn’t necessery to think about essential things; back to the time when one wanted to feel. Simultaneously, because of the way the photographs were taken, we feel the unknown of that distant period, the estrangement caused by memories.

Where is here? Orientation in the dark. After an extensive search and intensive discussions with blind persons and experts in orientation, we developed a tactile map of the Constanz Town according to functional criteria. It enables blind people, before entering an area, to acquire by itself. Space conception and in this way it permits a first and useful input during the orientation process. The tactile map could be integrated into future wayfinding systems or already existing systems. Moreover, acoustic aids are incorporated in order to build an environment “free of barriers“. “Being a blind person, the map makes me capable of more. I get something into my hands, which promises to be a piece of liberty for me. In my opinion, within this area there is still an unbelievable quantity of accumulated demand.“ (Urs Rehmann, birth-blind)

»Burg-Designshop - burgshop on tour« | 2005
As part of a summer term project in 2005 entitled “Burgshop” that was headed by Prof. Klaus Michel (IA) and Guido Englich (ID), Corina Forthuber’s design concept was clear winner following a public and internal vote.
The content of the concept
The shop was supposed to provide every student the opportunity of presenting themselves. Each student was given 10 litres of space, in the shape of a bucket. Individual students can use the white buckets that are inserted into the wall and illuminated from the rear. In total, this concept provides a second space that can be added to the shop. The walls containing the buckets are at an angle and stand on a base. Walls and floor, as well as the bucket, are all in white, in order to facilitate a neutral presentation area for the various products. Through the centre of the shop runs a long table – the counter. This serves the purposes of communication, the presentation of goods and reminder sketches on site. On the counter is the till, thus making it the information centre of the Burgdesignshop.
Burg-Designshop/ „burgshop on tour“
In July 2005 in the centre of Halle, the Burg-Designshop opened as a store that the students had fitted in line with their own drafts and ideas and where they could now very successfully sell their own products. In short-term projects and workshops, new product ideas originate that are produced by the designers in small series, to be tested in the market via the Burgshop. Should demand for a product increase, there is a selection of companies and workshops that can intervene to provide support in manufacturing and sales.
Since October 2006 there is also the “burgshop on tour”, a mobile version consisting of several handy modules and which is on tour in German and Switzerland.

In 2005 the Rheinland Industry Museum and Rheinland Landscape Association organised a competition. It called for proposals to make the museum’s train platform in Oberhausen main station more attractive. The aim was to carry out an overall strong design, which incorporated weighty objects from the heavy industry. The new design should also contribute to the atmosphere of the entire station and be styled to be eye-catching for travellers passing through and be effective from a distance.
